Things To Do Throughout August
- Feed containers with a liquid fertiliser & keep well watered
- Stake tall / heavy plants to minimize wind damage
- Dead head bedding plants to encourage further flowering
- Cut back borders to keep tidy
- Continue to feed tomato plants & water regularly
- Harvest main crop potatoes as the foliage turns yellow
- Lift / dry onions & shallots once foliage flops & turns yellow
- Watch out for potato & tomato blight
- Watch out for cabbage butterfly
- Cut hedges before they stop growing
- Watch for aphids on plants – rub off or use insecticide
- Continue to watch out for vine weevils (“c” shaped maggots)
- Prevent slugs attacking your plants by using slug bait
- Lawn brown ? don’t worry – autumn rains will green it up
- Prepare ground now for autumn grass seed
- Don’t feed your lawn with nitrogen - too much new growth will be damaged during the autumn
